The ruling by the Centers for Medicaid Services found the hospital sits 32 miles from Colusa Medical Center, just short of the 35-mile requirement. Without federal support, the hospital plans to shut down its emergency department by Oct. 21, with full closure to follow. Residents in the rural county, already among California’s worst for health outcomes, will face 30–40 minute drives for emergency care. Rep. Doug LaMalfa is drafting legislation to restore eligibility, but leaders warn survival may depend on an act of Congress.
