LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Kentucky is one of nine states that do not compensate those who have been wrongfully convicted.
Attorneys from the Kentucky Innocence Project and exonerees from here in Jefferson County are hoping to change that.
Louisville Metro Council issued a proclamation Thursday night honoring Kentucky exonerees, and also hoping to send a message to lawmakers to take that compensation bill across the finish line.
“When I walked out the door, I had a medical card, a year’s worth of medical records and a slap on the rear end saying, ‘sorry.’ That’s all you get,” said exoneree Paul Hurt.
Hurt was in prison from 2001 to 2019 for a sexual crime he did not commit. He said that although he has since been exonerated, he received no compensation from the judicial system, and still
