Santa Maria girls water polo team wins

Abigail Avila popped in eight goals, Jessica Grijalva scored five, and the Saints won their Ocean League opener, 24-13 against Lompoc at the Lompoc Aquatic Center Wednesday.

Ava Garcia scored four goals for the Saints. Arwen Galisky scored six goals, Jaklyn Steventsen tallied four times and Yaren Luwevanes scored three goals for the Braves.

The Saints will host Pioneer Valley Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Girls tennis

St. Joseph 6, Santa Ynez 3

The Pirates dropped to 1-2 in the Mountain League with a loss to the Knights Wednesday.

Claire Tipich had a hand in a doubles and singles point for Santa Ynez. Tipich teamed with Clea Malkmus for an 8-4 win in the No. 3 doubles match then won her No. 3 singles match 3-6, 6-4, 10-0.
