A land, sea and air search is underway for a missing angler off Bass Point after fishing gear washed up on the shoreline.

The fisherman launched his boat at Shellharbour on Thursday, September 26.

"Officers were told a male fisherman left Shellharbour Marina yesterday, last contacting authorities about 11pm yesterday, Thursday, September 25, indicating he would return at 11am today [Friday]," a NSW Police spokeswoman said.
