Nearly a dozen California-based organizations have been awarded grants to help veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the grants, a total of $84 million split up across 176 organizations nationwide, on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
In California, an estimated 9,310 veterans experienced homelessness last year, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. While it was a decrease by about 1,200 from 2023 figures, California still had the highest number of veterans experiencing homelessness.
More troubling was that more than half of these veterans were sleeping in places “not meant for human habitation,” according to the report.
