In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi stated, "Tributes to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birth anniversary. We recall his contributions to our nation during his long years in public life."
Dr. Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He is widely recognized for his role in steering the UPA government through a period of steady economic growth. Earlier, as Finance Minister in the 1990s under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, he was instrumental in implementing landmark economic reforms that transformed India's economy.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute, emphasizing Dr. Singh's role as a "gentle architect of India’s economic transformation". He highlighted Singh's humility and wisdom, stating, "His vision of economic reforms opened new doors of opportunity, creating a thriving middle class and lifting countless families out of poverty."
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed his respect for Dr. Singh, noting that his years of service would always be remembered with respect. The Indian National Congress echoed similar sentiments, honoring Singh's legacy as a distinguished economist who shaped modern India through his commitment to inclusive growth and political integrity.
Dr. Singh represented Assam in the Rajya Sabha for nearly three decades and served as Leader of Opposition from 1999 to 2004. Despite facing electoral defeat in 1999, he remained a prominent figure in Indian politics, influencing the nation’s economic framework.
