Shewarge Alene, who won the women’s race in May at the Stockholm Marathon, has died at the age of 30 after becoming ill.
Officials with the Stockholm Marathon released a statement online saying Alene became ill during a training session in Ethiopia. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Canadian Running reports Alene was a native of Ethiopia. She moved to New York City while in her late teens to pursue a pro running career.
The BBC reports Alene won 12 of the 27 marathons she entered as a professional between 2011 and 2025. The BBC reports her fastest marathon time came in 2023 in Cape Town, South Africa, when she finished in 2:27:26.
