New Delhi : The Delhi High Court has once again pressed the case for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stressing the need for a single legal framework that prevents personal or customary laws from clashing with national legislation.

Justice Arun Monga raised the issue while hearing a bail plea, pointing to the contradictions between Islamic personal law and Indian criminal law. Under Islamic law, a girl who has reached puberty (usually assumed at the age of 15) can marry. However, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), such a marriage is treated as an offence, as the legal marriageable age is 18 years for girls.
