On a sleepy August morning in 1991, farmer Eli Springs didn’t harvest hay. He harvested a mystery.

Springs discovered 16 crop circles on his 20-acre hay field, with two more appearing the following morning. The shapes were not all perfect circles. Some were elongated and overlapping, but all had crushed foliage. "It was just flat on the ground like something had pushed it right in," Springs said.

Experts ruled out human involvement, while the National Weather Service dismissed weather-related causes.

Springs remained baffled, saying, "Humans couldn’t have done it without leaving tracks."
