STATE CENTER, Iowa (KCCI) - The intersection of Highway 30 and 3rd Avenue SW in State Center could look a lot different in the coming years, KCCI reports.

But despite support from law enforcement and the Iowa DOT, residents aren’t as keen on making the change.

The DOT is proposing to change the intersection to a reduced conflict intersection. This means rather than crossing four lanes of highway traffic, drivers would merge and make a U-turn to turn left. They say this will help cut down on the crashes they’ve seen since 2014.

“We would expect it to reduce crashes by about 70% in the fatal and major injury, or 50-60% in the all crash category or property damage,” Iowa DOT Assistant District Engineer Benjamin Adey said.

But not everyone is on board.
