INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was found guilty of murdering a woman in 2023 on the city's near east side .

A jury found Deonta Nelson guilty of murder and the habitual offender sentencing enhancement after a three-day trial. He will also face the felony firearm enhancement at his sentencing hearing, scheduled for Monday Oct. 20.

On Aug. 28, 2023, neighbors in the 200 block of North Rural Street, near East Washington Street, said they heard the gunfire that led to the death of 27-year-old Emily Lee Anna Willis.

According to arrest records, two people playing basketball nearby saw a car pull into a nearby church parking lot. They told police two people inside the car were trying to talk to a woman, later identified as Willis, who was walking away from them.
