BMW is recalling nearly 200,000 vehicles due to a potential fire risk, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported.
The affected vehicles' engine starter may overheat, according to NHTSA's online notice from Tuesday, Sept. 23. The agency is advising owners to "park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy is complete."
According to BMW, a short circuit in the starter relay may increase the risk of a fire, per the federal safety regulators' online notice.
Owner notification letters are set to be mailed out by Nov. 14.

Which BMW vehicles are affected by the recall?
The recall potentially affects 196,355 vehicles in the following years and models:
- 2019-2021 BMW 330i
- 2019-2022 BMW Z4
- 2020-2022 BMW 530i, X3 and X4
- 2020-2022 Toyota Supra
- 2021-2022 BMW 430i and 430i Convertible
- 2022 BMW 230i
Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting Nov. 14.
What should I do with my recalled BMW vehicle?
Owners are advised to stop driving their cars and park the vehicles outside and away from structures until the necessary repair is conducted, according to the NHTSA notice.
Dealers will replace the engine starter free of charge, the notice said.
