With the $3 billion convention center project underway in downtown Dallas, conservation groups say the project could play a key role in saving migratory birds.

Each spring and fall, billions of birds pass through Texas along the Central Flyway, one of the continent’s busiest migration routes. However, when the birds pass through large metro areas, artificial lights and glass reflections can disorient them.

Since 2021, volunteers with the Texas Conservation Alliance have collected data on more than 3,000 bird collisions with downtown buildings. Groups go out to count dead birds throughout the fall migration season.
