LEELANAU COUNTY — The Leelanau Conservancy has raised $8 million to permanently protect the long-dormant Sugar Loaf property and transform it into a public natural area by spring 2026.
According to a Sept. 26 news release from the organization, the funds were secured thanks to broad community support and the generosity of the landowners.
The 285-acre site will be donated to the Conservancy and protected in perpetuity.
“This is an extraordinary moment for Leelanau County,” said Tom Nelson, the Conservancy’s executive director. “The community and beyond rallied to bring Sugar Loaf back to life. This collective effort has ensured that one of Michigan’s most cherished landscapes will be preserved and open to all forever.”
Plans for the property include a trail network for hiking, biking, s
