Angela Caputo was clearly disappointed that she wasn’t able to persuade her council colleagues to move forward with a plan that might help save a baby’s life.

She should be disappointed.

The Ward 3 councillor had introduced a motion asking staff to develop a wholesome report on the Hope’s Cradle program, including capital and operating costs, potential liability issues and seek feedback from stakeholder agencies. The result: c ouncil chose not to move forward with implementing Hope’s Cradle.

Hope’s Cradle is described as “a secure, temperature-controlled, safe surrender site installed at a designated community site.”

It allows a parent or guardian in crisis to anonymously leave an unharmed newborn in the care of authorities to prevent infant abandonment.
