Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sparked fury on social media after he announced a final decision on recognizing a slate of soldiers.
In a video post on X on Thursday, Hegseth announced that 20 soldiers who received Medals of Honor for their involvement in the 1890 Battle of Wounded Knee will be able to keep the recognition, saying that “their place in our nation’s history is no longer up for debate.”
The move comes after Hegseth’s predecessor, Lloyd Austin, ordered a review of the medals in late July of last year. According to historical records, an estimated 250 Native Americans, including women and children, of the Lakota Sioux tribe were killed, and at least 100 were wounded, on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation near Wounded Knee Creek.
