Leh/Kargil, Sept 26: Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was arrested by Ladakh Police on Friday, two days after violent protests in Leh left four people dead and more than 80 injured.
The Union Home Ministry has accused Wangchuk, a senior member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB)—which, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), has been spearheading the agitation for statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
According to the Ministry, his speeches during a fortnight-long hunger strike contained “provocative” references to the Arab Spring and student protests in Nepal, which allegedly fueled anger among protesters.
