The CEO of a Reno-based internet provider pleaded not guilty 31 times Sept. 25 in Washoe County District Court in a case involving millions of dollars in missing taxpayer money .

Stephen Kromer is accused of stealing state funds that had been given to Uprise as part of a project to bring fiber-optic internet to Lovelock, 90 minutes east of Reno.

Prosecutors say Kromer made multiple transfers over a series of weeks totalling about $7 million into a personal bank account from an Uprise business account tied to Nevada Department of Transportation funds.

NDOT had given Uprise just over $9 million for the project. It's not clear where any of the money is now.

The case was transferred from Reno Justice Court, where Kromer was first charged, to the Second Judicial District Court in Washoe
