The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into a prison "altercation" that left multiple inmates with stab wounds.

The South Dakota Department of Corrections confirmed to the Argus Leader an "altercation involving multiple inmates" occurred Sept. 25 at the Jameson Annex, a maximum security prison that's adjacent to the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

"To maintain integrity of the ongoing investigation, no further details are being released at this time," DOC spokesperson Nicole Gednalske stated in an email Sept. 26.

Tony Mangan, communications director for Attorney General Marty Jackley's Office, which oversees DCI, confirmed six inmates were stabbed at the Jameson Annex during the incident.
