Two months after Grants Pass police repeatedly punched and elbowed a motorist in the head during a traffic stop, one of the officers wrote a letter to the court asking a judge to dismiss the case against the driver.

Sgt. Michael W. Mace cited “concerns of officers needing to protect themselves from litigation.”

The letter doesn’t appear to have worked.

A video surfaced recently on Facebook of the stop and the driver has now put the city on notice of his intent to sue, alleging police used excessive force during an unreasonable search and seizure last year.

In his memo to Josephine County Circuit Court, Mace didn’t mention that he was one of the two officers who punched driver Jared L. Gunn in the head.
