A judge rejected a plea deal Friday for a Hobart man in a drunken crash after the motorcyclist who lost his leg said he opposed it.

Peter Baum, 50, had pleaded guilty in court in May to leaving the scene of an accident resulting in catastrophic injury to another person, a Level 4 felony.

The deal called for Baum to avoid prison with 2-12 years in Lake County Community Corrections.

The victim, Nick Garcia, said on the stand Friday that Deputy Prosecutor Keith Anderson told him that a 12-year prison term would not hold up. A deal was in the works for four years in prison and two on work release. He was ok with that, Garcia said.
