GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -- A vandal targeted a prehistoric fossil at the historic Gettysburg National Military Park, the National Park Service said.

The anchisauripus fossil is a popular feature of the South Confederate Avenue Bridge, affectionately known as "Dinosaur Bridge" because a preserved track from a dinosaur is imprinted on a capstone that forms part of the bridge.

The dinosaur is believed to have lived approximately 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period.

Park staff noticed the capstone was missing on Thursday, Sept. 25, the park service said in a statement. It added evidence suggested someone used a heavy object to strike the stone and pry it free.
