THE RAMPUR police on Friday shot dead an absconding accused who was wanted in connection with the recent killing of a 19-year-old youth, Deepak Gupta, in Gorakhpur, officers said.
The man, identified as Jubair alias Kalia, had a `1 lakh reward for information leading to his arrest after being declared absconding in the September 16 incident in Pipraich, where Deepak, who had been preparing for the NEET exam, was chasing the alleged cattle smugglers. He was found seriously injured and later died while receiving treatment at hospital.
The Rampur district police acted on a tip-off that Jubair was in the Ganj area. Officers said an exchange of fire took place when they attempted to apprehend him; Jubair was wounded and later died at a hospital.
