CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG) - Automated license plate readers also known as flock cameras are coming to the city of Coralville.

The city council narrowly approved the cameras Tuesday.

“These flock cameras are used across the country and they’ve been used in solving about 700,000 cases a year,” councilman Rich Vogelzang said.

Coralville joins other cities in Eastern Iowa like Dubuque and Cedar Rapids who use Flock cameras.

From April through June, Flock alerted the Dubuque Police Department more than 700 times when a wanted vehicle passed under its cameras.

“With this technology the cameras are reading all the plates that go through and then notifying us when the one that we are looking for is there,” Lieutenant Luke Bock with the Dubuque Police Department said.
