DES MOINES, Iowa — ICE agents arrested Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyana national and the Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, for being an illegal alien with a loaded handgun and other items. Roberts, who was serving in his role without work authorization and under a final order of removal, was taken into custody early Friday.

Roberts attempted to evade arrest by fleeing in his vehicle, which was later found abandoned in a wooded area. With the help of the Iowa State Patrol, ICE officers located and detained him.

Roberts has previous weapons charges from February 5, 2020. He entered the United States on a student visa in 1999 and was ordered for removal in May 2024. The ATF is investigating how Roberts obtained the handgun, as it is illegal for individuals without legal status in the
