BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- While Kern River Valley residents are seeing fewer power shutoffs following the heated month of June, Southern California Edison said it is continuing its work in the area to guarantee reliable power for residents in the future.

On Wednesday, Edison International announced SCE has been upgrading equipment in the Kernville area. The work includes replacing bare wire with covered conductor lines, which are coated wires that reduce the possibility of sparks occurring and potentially setting off wildfires.

SCE also replaced the wooden poles with more fire-resistant fiberglass material and plans to underground the power lines, which is the process of burying electrical wires in areas with higher risks of fire.
