LANCASTER, Pa. — Forget the Wild West — the real gold rush is happening right here and now. Gold prices are hitting record highs — nearly $3,800 an ounce — and that has people digging through drawers to see what they can cash in.

Kathryn Pearce, the owner of Veleska Jewelry in Lancaster, said the surge in prices is unprecedented. “We’re seeing jumps in gold in a day that we wouldn’t see for months… maybe a six-month time frame, we’re seeing actually happen in a day,” Pearce said.

For the first time ever, gold soared past $3,790 per troy ounce Monday night. Experts say the surge is being fueled by central bank buying, strong investor demand, and uncertainty about where the U.S. economy is headed.
