NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Department of Human Services announced this week changes coming to who qualifies for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The updates are outlined in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (HR 1) passed by Congress in July.
The biggest change is to work requirements, which have always been a part of SNAP, but are now getting stricter.
“In the past, it was for individuals between the ages of 18 and 54, usually single households without children, but now it includes families with children,” said Signe Anderson, Senior Director of Nutrition Advocacy at the Tennessee Justice Center.
Starting at the end of October, people between the ages of 18 and 65 who don’t have a disability or don’t live with children under the
