Credit and debit cards are not being accepted at station gates on Sydney’s rail network, as an unexplained malfunction of the state’s Opal system broadens.
After commuters reported technical issues with Opal card top-up machines at train stations on Friday, some station gates were left open on Saturday morning after readers stopped accepting credit and debit cards for payment.
Transport for NSW were working to fix a malfunction on Sydney’s Opal system on Saturday.
The problem was confined to rail and was not affecting other modes of public transport.
In a statement on Friday, Transport for NSW had asked those affected by the top-up machine outage to use credit or debit cards to access services.
