The New Mexico Department of Justice is warning people about a scam of people pretending to be immigration attorneys.
According to officials, scammers are targeting people through social media apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, offering paid legal immigration services.
"Scams are always evolving, and particularly scams involving people claiming to be lawyers or provide legal services are definitely not new. But all of them have one thing in common. They target people who are vulnerable, and they prey upon fear," said Anjana Samant, the deputy counsel for impact litigation with the New Mexico Department of Justice.
