Joe Chow, whose family owned and operated the Vic Tavern for nearly seven decades, died Sept. 26 at the age of 76. His brother, John, 86, died earlier this month. The business closed in 1989 and was demolished in 1990.

Damage to a second Ken Danby painting on display at the Centennial Room of the public library is not believed to have been an act of vandalism. Opening the Gates, depicting the Great Lakes vessel Yankcanuck passing through the Soo Locks, is owned by the muncipality and was on loan to the Algoma Arts Festival Association as part of the Danby display.
