The proposal has particular political significance for Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who currently chairs the standing committee on external affairs; with an extension, he could retain his position for another two years despite ongoing differences with his party.
The terms of the current committees are set to expire on September 26. While changes in committee chairs are unlikely, the tenure of newly appointed members may be doubled from one year to two.
