COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Town of South Congaree announced the retirement of Police Chief Steven Jonas on Friday afternoon.

“We thank him for his service to our community and wish him well in his retirement,” the Town of South Congaree said in a post on Facebook.

Chief Jonas joined the Town of South Congaree in August 2002 and was appointed Chief in August 2024.

The announcement comes a month after Jonas was involved in a wrong-way crash on South Beltline Boulevard in Columbia.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Jonas crashed his police vehicle into an SUV on Wednesday night, sending three people to the hospital.

Troopers said the crash happened when the former police chief crossed the center line and collided with a GMC Terrain.
