Document fraud is criminal amendment, preparation, or forgery of financial and identity documents for illegal advantage. They tamper with passports, PAN cards, Aadhaar cards, bank passbooks, and even graduation certificates to engage in crime from identity theft to financial fraud. For victims, the consequences are severe—unauthorized bank transactions, loans availed in their name, or even virtual criminal records linked to their identity. With transactions on the internet being the norm, document fraud is no longer the issue of producing counterfeit paper documents; it is now extended to scanned documents, e-documents, and digital IDs being altered to present as authentic.
