The Union Cabinet on September 24 approved the addition of 10,023 medical seats across existing government colleges and hospitals, with an investment of ₹15,034 crore, in a bid to strengthen healthcare coverage in India. According to an official statement released on Saturday, the decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The move is part of a larger plan to create 75,000 additional medical seats over the next five years, addressing the persistent gap between demand and supply in medical education. With a population of 1.4 billion, India has significantly expanded its medical infrastructure over the past decade, but the need for trained healthcare professionals continues to grow.
