KARUR: A tragic stampede at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur on Saturday has resulted in the deaths of at least 36 people, with the toll expected to rise. Among the deceased are three children and ten women. The incident occurred as supporters had been waiting for hours for the arrival of actor-turned-politician Vijay, who had to pause his speech when he noticed people fainting in the crowd. In response, he ordered ambulances to the scene and distributed water bottles to those in distress.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, stating, "The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured."
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin is closely monitoring the situation and plans to visit Karur on Sunday. He has directed officials to ensure immediate medical assistance for those affected. Health Minister Ma Subramanian reported that over 40 individuals are currently receiving treatment, with additional medical personnel dispatched to assist.
The stampede occurred in a crowded area of the rally, leading to chaos as many supporters collapsed. Chief Minister Stalin has urged the public to cooperate with medical and law enforcement teams to manage the situation effectively. The event has been cancelled in light of the tragedy.
