FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — In a morning filled with Ryder Cup history, Scottie Scheffler finds himself on the wrong end of the record books.
Scheffler became the first world No. 1 ever to lose his first three matches of a Ryder Cup, per stats guru Justin Ray. His latest came in foursomes on Saturday morning, falling to Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre, who took the match, 1 up.
He is now 2-5-3 in the Ryder Cup, though the 0-3 mark is a thorn in the USA's side at Bethpage Black. He has no points thus far, and the Americans trail by five points at 8½-3½ heading to Saturday afternoon four-ball, where Scheffler will play with Bryson DeChambeau against Tommy Fleetwood, who's 3-0 this week, and Justin Rose.
If the Americans have any chance of coming back, Scheffler has to win his final two matches. And even at that, the U.S. as a whole needs to have a much better afternoon to make things interesting come Sunday singles.
