Passengers have been left shocked after a fire broke out on a moving train.

The blaze was reported at 4.09pm on Thursday on a train travelling from Richmond to Flinders Street in Melbourne.

Police say it is believed a magazine or similar item was set alight in a train carriage.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) rushed to the scene and brought it under control by 4.21pm.

No injuries have been reported, but the train suffered minor damage.

Police say the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
