PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The man armed with a machete who was shot by Phoenix police while keeping a toddler captive earlier this week was booked into jail on Friday, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said.

Thirty-five-year-old Wilson Melgar-Melgar was released from the hospital and taken straight to jail, where he faces multiple charges. His bond is set at $750,000.

According to police, officers were called out to a home on 31st Avenue, north of Bethany Home Road, on Wednesday night and found Melgar-Melgar holding a machete with a toddler hostage.

Officers said they tried using less-lethal methods to get the man to drop the large knife and give up the child, but he refused.
