Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay said his heart was "shattered" and that he was feeling "unbearable and indescribable pain" as nearly 40 people lost their lives and several others were injured after a stampede broke out in Tamil Nadu’s Karur where the actor-turned-politician held a poll rally as part of the preparations for next year’s Assembly elections.

"My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital," Vijay wrote in Tamil on X, hours after the tragic incident in Karur.
