PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - President Donald Trump on Saturday morning announced he has authorized federal troops deployed into Portland to protect ICE facilities from “domestic terrorists.”

It’s not clear what branch of the military will be sent to Portland, or when the troops might arrive.

The ICE facility in southwest Portland has been the target of frequent protests this year, occasionally leading to violent confrontations. Some federal agents have been hurt and several protesters have been charged with assault. When protesters erected a guillotine outside the building earlier this summer, the Department of Homeland Security described it as “unhinged behavior.”

The protests peaked in June, with only a couple dozen protesters outside the building on most nights since.
