Construction of the Broad Street Market’s fire-damaged brick building is expected to start soon as the city lines up finances.

During a Sept. 23 City of Harrisburg council meeting , officials said the city needs to find an additional $14.4 million in the 2025 budget to fund the project.

In order to do so, it is seeking a budget amendment to reallocate unspent funds from other sources to balance expenses associated with the project.

A fire heavily damaged the market’s brick building in July 2023, displacing nearly two dozen vendors.

The city has vowed to rebuild and hired Murphy and Diffenhafer architects in York County. The administration recently opened 11 invitations for bids for the construction work.

Previously, the city said construction would start around Sept. 30.
