KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Knoxville Police Department is investigating a deadly assault that happened in South Knoxville Saturday morning.
According to KPD, officers went to the 200 block of W. Young High Pike at around 9:20 a.m. and found a man, identified as 57-year-old James Phipps, unresponsive in the rear parking lot suffering from several blunt force injuries. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
KPD said a witness gave officers a description of the suspect, who was found with help from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office on Kingston Pike.
That suspect, 51-year-old Fernando Carerra, was detained for questioning. Detectives learned that he and Phipps knew each other and got into a physical altercation, which KPD said may have been due to a prior dispute.
