A council has highlighted continuing concern at the number of school pupils in Redcar and Cleveland being suspended or permanently excluded, despite falls in both categories.

Redcar and Cleveland Council identified the issue as a “red risk” in corporate terms as part of a discussion around a draft annual governance statement shared with cabinet members. It revealed there had been 7,591 suspensions in 2024/25, a 12.8% decrease on the 8,708 which occurred in the previous 12 months.

Secondary school suspensions made up the majority (86%), followed by pupil referral units and other alternative provision (7%) with the remainder being issued in primary schools.
