Hurricane Humberto has intensified to Category 5 over the open Atlantic, with peak sustained winds of 160 mph. It stays over water and will send large swells and dangerous rip currents toward the East Coast while curving away from the U.S. mainland.

A nearby disturbance near Cuba and the Bahamas is expected to become Imelda. It could run parallel to the Southeast coast early next week with heavy rain, gusty winds, and rough surf for parts of Florida and the Carolinas.

Humberto’s size and the surrounding upper-level pattern should keep that system somewhat sheared and lopsided, which can limit intensification. Arkansas remains quiet with no impacts expected.
