Winning the BoomBox Classic was the goal for Southern when it faced rival Jackson State, the defending Celebration Bowl champion.

More importantly, the Jaguars were motivated by their first opportunity to get a victory that would count toward the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings. Making that reality was going to be a challenge against a Jackson State team that has been voted the No. 1 HBCU team on both BOXTOROW’s media and coaches poll every week since the preseason.

Southern played inspired ball for the majority of the game, but couldn’t pull off the upset after having 13 penalties for 111 yards.
