WASHINGTON — The superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week, triggering protests and raising concerns over heightened immigration enforcement nationwide.

Dr. Ian Roberts was taken into ICE custody in Iowa on Friday. An ICE spokesperson told WUSA9 that Roberts does not have a valid work permit and was allegedly in possession of a hunting knife and a loaded firearm at the time of his arrest — both of which, the agency said, are illegal for individuals without legal status in the U.S.
