ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Marie Dietz woke up last Sunday morning to a disturbing phone call about her cousin.

“John-Michael’s been shot,” she said.

John-Michael Dietz’s family said he is a beloved and active karate and self-defense instructor. He was allegedly shot at Hill and Logan Streets in Atlanta after he got out to inspect what he thought might have been damage to his car.

“All he remembers is he heard a loud noise and he was like I don’t know if I thought I hit a huge pothole,” said Marie Dietz.

“He got out to investigate and all he remembers is, he was shot, he was on the ground,” she said.

Dietz was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition and spent a week in the hospital.
