A multi-agency search is underway for two men and a boat missing off the northern NSW coast.

Police say two men were aboard the 8.4-metre white catamaran Mangrove Jack when it left Yamba Harbour yesterday morning heading north to the Gold Coast.

The alarm was raised when the catamaran missed its call in time last night at Point Danger on the NSW-Queensland border.

Marine Rescue NSW commenced the search last night after failing to make contact via radio before heading back out again this morning.

Police and Marine Rescue teams from New South Wales and Queensland have been searching the area from Evans Head to the Gold Coast, along with aerial support from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
