A Bethpage brawl broke out as Ryder Cup tensions erupted in the grandstand beside the 18th green at the New York course. ‌

Saturday's action was charged with raw emotion, as Rory McIlroy endured relentless abuse from hostile spectators, forcing the PGA of America to intervene with official warnings. ‌

The mounting hostility between McIlroy and the crowd prompted state police to flood Bethpage Black in a desperate bid to restore order. ‌

A complete line of state troopers was stationed along the ropes surrounding the match featuring McIlroy and Shane Lowry against Cameron Young and Justin Thomas, with police dogs also deployed.

Lowry was even forced to be physically held back from confronting an abusive spectator.
